Tan Sri graduated with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from King's College, University of London in 1973, earned a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from Queen Mary College in 1977, and completed post-doctoral research at Oregon State and Pennsylvania State University. He led Tenaga Nasional Berhad from 1 Sept 1996 to 31 Aug 2000 through the Asian Financial Crisis, strengthening governance, operational discipline, regional reach, and the company's balance sheet.

Today he chairs and advises organisations including Linde Malaysia, ITMAX System, Plytec Holding, NUENERGY Holdings, KEB Berhad, MIGHT, the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority, FMM, UNITEN, USM, Monash University Malaysia, the Tropical Science Foundation, and Malay College Kuala Kangsar. His honours include Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Perlis (S.P.M.P.) and Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M.).
